Run a Real Project

Everything I start turns into a swamp by week three.

You become: Someone who ships what they scope

Project management without the certification theatre: a scope with edges, slices that ship, the one-page plan, risks named early, and a finish that actually finishes.

Practice

Slicing, sequencing, and reporting status honestly.

Create

One real project, planned on a page and landed.

Evidence

The plan, the status notes, and the shipped thing.

01

Scope it with edges

  1. Create20m

Write the one-sentence definition of done

Pick a real project — work, home, side thing. One sentence: 'This is done when ___.' It must be checkable by a stranger. 'Redo the garden' fails; 'the beds are planted and the old fence is at the dump' passes.

You’ll have:A definition of done a stranger could verify.

  2. Create20m

    Write the NOT-doing list

Five things adjacent to the project that you are explicitly not doing this time. This is the highest-leverage document in project management, because scope creep never announces itself — it arrives as 'while we're at it'.

You’ll have:Five exclusions, written where you'll see them.

  3. Practice40m

Slice it into pieces that ship on their own

Break the project into 3-6 slices where each one is independently done and visible. Not 'phase 1: research' — 'the front bed is planted'. If a slice can't be shown to someone, it's a task list wearing a trench coat.

You’ll have:Slices where each produces something showable.
