Know What You Actually Own
“I think I own more than I actually do.”
You become: Someone who checks the paper before assuming it's theirs
Owning something and having it in your life are not the same claim — one is a feeling, the other is a document with your name on it. This journey walks the real gap: what actually transfers with a title, a deed, or a lease versus what you're just using; what paperwork has to exist when something is gifted to you, not just handed over; the real total cost of owning something against renting or leasing it; and a needs-vs-wants pass run on an actual statement instead of a guess.
Understand
Why 'basically mine' and legally mine are different claims, and what document proves which one you actually have.
Practice
Pulling real titles, deeds, and gift paperwork, and running the actual own-vs-rent math on something you use.
Create
A written ownership record for what's yours and a real needs/wants/savings split built from an actual statement.
Evidence
Titles and deeds you've actually read, one completed transfer, a buy-vs-lease comparison with a decision written down, and a budget split built from real numbers.
See What You Actually Own
Separate what you use from what you're actually named on, before you assume owning and having are the same thing.
- Understand20m
List every big-ticket thing you use and who's actually named on it
Write down every big item in your life you use regularly: your home or apartment, your car, any major appliance or piece of equipment, anything expensive enough that losing it would hurt. Next to each one, write the actual name(s) on the title, deed, lease, or loan — not who paid for it, not who uses it most, the legal name on the paper. Leave a blank if you don't know and can't find it yet.
You’ll have:A written list of 5+ big items with the legal owner-of-record (or 'unknown') next to each.
- Practice30m
Pull the real title, deed, or lease for one item on your list
Pick the item on your list with the highest stakes — your car or your home. Find the actual document: the vehicle title (glovebox, safe, or your state DMV's online portal), the deed (county recorder's office website), or your signed lease. Read the ownership section line by line. If you can't locate it, that's the finding — write down where you'll request a copy from and by when.
You’ll have:The real title/deed/lease document, opened and read — or a written next step with a request date if it's missing.
- Create25m
Write down what you're actually on the hook for — owner or tenant
For your current housing (or a leased vehicle), write two columns: what you're legally responsible for right now (repairs, rent or payment, the insurance type you're required to carry) and what would actually change if you owned instead of rented or leased it. Run your real numbers through the rent-vs-buy comparison to see the actual gap, not a guessed one.
You’ll have:A written two-column comparison with your real numbers plugged in, not estimates.
