Health Insurance Without Panic

I picked the cheapest plan and then a $2,000 bill turned up anyway.

You become: Someone who can choose a plan on purpose

Five numbers decide what you actually pay, and the monthly premium is the least important of them. Deductible, copay, coinsurance, out-of-pocket maximum, and network — decoded.

The five numbers

  1. Understand20m

    Learn premium versus deductible

The premium is what you pay monthly whether or not you use it. The deductible is what you pay out of pocket before the insurer starts paying at all. Write both definitions in your own words.

You’ll have:Both terms defined by you.

  2. Understand20m

    Learn copay versus coinsurance

A copay is a flat fee for a visit — say $30. Coinsurance is a percentage of the bill — say 20% — and it applies after the deductible. A percentage of a hospital stay is a very different animal from a flat fee.

You’ll have:Both terms defined by you.

  3. Understand25m

Find the out-of-pocket maximum — the number that matters

This is the ceiling. Once you've paid this much in a plan year, the insurer covers 100% of covered, in-network care. Find it on any plan document you can get hold of.

    You’ll have:An out-of-pocket maximum, located on a real plan.
