Playbook 17A Ledger of Kept Promises, Not a Pep Talk

Build Confidence You Can Prove

Confidence built on affirmation collapses on contact. Confidence built on receipts doesn't. One goal sized for your worst day, an evidence file, and returns counted instead of streaks.

What you end up holding

A first rung completed today, and an evidence file your doubt can't argue with.

The workflow — 4 steps

  1. 1

Ladder one intimidating goal down to a first rung sized for your worst day.

Small enough that missing is harder than doing. The worst days are the ones that decide.

    Open Goal Ladder
  2. 2

Log every day you show up — and every return after a gap.

Returns count for more than keeps. There is deliberately nothing here that can break.

    Open Return Tracker
  3. 3

Start the evidence file: fifteen entries from the last two years.

Things finished, problems solved, kind words in writing, hard days survived. Most people are startled by their own file.

  4. 4

On the next bad day, open the file instead of arguing with the spiral.

You cannot out-argue a feeling, but you can out-document it.

The evidence

Mastery Experiences

The most effective way of developing a strong sense of efficacy is through mastery experiences. Successes build a robust belief in one's personal efficacy.

Albert Bandura, self-efficacy theory

Four sources feed self-efficacy — mastery, modelling, persuasion, and physiological state — and mastery outranks the rest by a distance. 'Just be confident' is persuasion, the weakest source. A ladder of completed rungs is mastery, the strongest.

The older idea

Faithful in Little

Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.

Luke 16:10

The small promise kept is not practice for the real thing — it is the real thing at a smaller size. Trust, including trust in yourself, is built in denominations small enough to keep.

A playbook ends in a document. These journeys change what you can do — same subject, more of it.
