Journey 50 · Running a businessbeginningfinding directionbuilding

Start the Channel Backwards

Everyone says 'just start posting'. The channels that made it did not just post.

You become: Someone with ten published videos and a channel built like the big ones started theirs

Work backwards from channels that made it: steal the map from their early days, pick one viewer and one repeatable format, set up small, and ship ten videos as reps — not launches.

Steal the map

  1. Understand45m

Reverse-engineer three channels that made it in your niche

Pick three channels you'd trade places with. For each, sort their videos oldest-first and watch parts of the first five. Write down: how bad was the camera, when did the format they're now known for appear, and how long from video one to their first hit. You are collecting permission slips.

You’ll have:Notes on three channels' first five videos and the gap to their first hit.

  2. Create25m

Write the viewer and the promise in two sentences

Sentence one: who the viewer is, specifically — not 'people interested in fitness' but 'guys in their 30s getting back in shape in a garage'. Sentence two: 'This channel helps them ____.' If the blank could fit fifty channels, tighten it until it fits five.

You’ll have:Two sentences: the viewer, and the promise.

  3. Understand30m

Pick one format you could repeat fifty times

A format is a repeatable shape: 'I test X for 30 days', 'beginner watches an expert do Y', 'the real cost of Z'. Pick one you could make fifty of without running dry, and that your three studied channels would recognise. Fifty is the test — a format you'd exhaust by episode six is a series, not a channel.

You’ll have:One named format and ten example episode ideas proving it has fifty in it.
